When I first enter the mining area I take only a small bucket of tools. I remain a good distance from the wall or ledge digging areas and enter a meditative state of mind, and reach out to the earth with my whole being. My intent is to shine out of my body and enter the rock. First, I feel my thoughts shift from mental chatter of messages being spoken loudly over the sound of swirling storms inside my head, to gentle breezes whose messages are faint whispers in the distance. I let this ball of quieted light float down from my head into the center of my chest and expand, waiting for the sleeping spark of divine light within my heart to ignite and radiate out to join me. Then I direct this sphere of radiant light to shift down to the bottom of my spine and, after connecting to the earth beneath me and the sky above, I imagine the light pouring out of my body and touching the soul of the rock, the elemental beings and the nature spirits within. Only after communing this way do I turn my attention to where to mine. I turn slowly left and right, scanning the hillside as if the network of nerves in my solar plexus was a sensing device. When I pass over the spot I am to mine I feel the energy lighten, expand, become happily playful in my solar plexus. If I feel a positive response from more than one spot, I aim my solar plexus at each one separately and ask my body to signal me which one you go to. Now that the crystals have called out to me, it is time to clean up the site and prepare to set steel.
